AI Revolutionizes Cancer Treatment and Medicine with Groundbreaking Breakthroughs
Researchers are using artificial intelligence to tailor cancer treatments and uncover overlooked uses for existing medicines. AI can analyze microscopic images, identify subtle biological signals, and even search existing drugs for new uses.
Moderna and Merck announced positive results from a Phase 3 melanoma trial, where an individualized neoantigen therapy met its primary endpoint for recurrence-free survival. This therapy encodes up to 34 unique targets selected by AI algorithms, which analyze the patient's tumor mutations and select potential cancer-fighting targets.
Another group of researchers is using AI to identify new uses for existing medicines. The nonprofit Every Cure uses AI to scan biomedical knowledge and look for connections between existing medicines and other diseases they might potentially treat. This approach has already led to breakthroughs, such as the use of ruxolitinib to treat multicentric Castleman disease.
AI is also being used in fertility treatments. The Sperm Tracking and Recovery (STAR) system at Columbia University Fertility Center uses high-speed imaging and AI detection models to identify sperm cells that conventional testing might miss.
