AI Safety Concerns and Oil Price Surge Drag Market Lower
The stock market suffered losses on Monday due to a rare combination of factors, including concerns about artificial intelligence development and rising energy prices.
A group of prominent AI executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Tesla's Elon Musk, have expressed caution about the pace of AI innovation, citing safety risks. This led to a decline in chip stocks, with Nvidia losing 3%, Broadcom falling 3%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) dropping 5%. Intel slid 7% and Marvell Technology fell 8%.
The energy market also played a significant role in the stock market's performance. Brent crude futures surged 4% to $108 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude rose 3% to $103. This was due in part to Saudi Arabia's decision to shut down its East-West oil pipeline after multiple drone attacks.
