AI Stocks Suffer Steep Decline as Wall Street Loses Momentum
Wall Street's recent momentum came to an abrupt halt on Tuesday as AI stocks plummeted, pulling the market further away from its all-time high. The S&P 500 dropped 0.7% for a third consecutive modest loss, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.2%, and the Nasdaq composite sank 1.3%. Micron Technology led the decline, falling 7%, followed closely by chip companies Nvidia and Broadcom, which dropped 2.3% and 3.2% respectively.
The recent downturn in AI stocks can be attributed to concerns that prices have skyrocketed too high and may not be sustainable. Additionally, worries about a potential decrease in demand for memory, processors, and other data center building blocks are also contributing to the decline. Despite these setbacks, Micron has still more than tripled this year.
The market's woes were further exacerbated by high interest rates, which have remained elevated despite a slight dip in yields on Tuesday. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield edged down to 4.70%, but remains well above its pre-war level of 3.97%. The high-yield environment has made investors more cautious about investing in expensive stocks, including those in the AI sector.
