AI Takes the Reins: Google's Migration Sparks Automation Fears
Google's AI Max migration is underway, upgrading all Search campaigns using campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets to AI Max. This change will run throughout September and cannot be opted out of.
The move aims to improve ad performance and user experience by automating manual tasks such as keyword matching and ad targeting. According to Mark Ritson, this shift may ultimately benefit marketers despite initial concerns.
AI Max has already shown promising results, with an average of 7% more conversions at a similar cost per action (CPA). However, some independent data suggests that AI Max campaigns may deliver lower return on ad spend (ROAS) and higher invalid traffic rates compared to traditional match types.
The industry is witnessing a trend towards automation, with Microsoft folding Predictive Matching into its own version of AI Max and Meta incorporating more automated systems. This shift raises concerns about the impact on marketing jobs, particularly for mid-level digital tacticians whose skills may become redundant.
