AI Threat to Bitcoin: Ecosystem Infrastructure at Risk
A recent study by IBM researcher Rob Campbell warns that advanced AI could target weaknesses in Bitcoin's ecosystem, not its underlying protocol. This comes as some light is shed on the difference between a network's fundamental security and the vulnerabilities of its surrounding infrastructure.
The study points out that while an AI with advanced capabilities may struggle to compromise the base Bitcoin protocol, it could still exploit weaknesses in services such as wallets, exchanges, and mining software. The researcher attributes this resilience to the use of a non-Turing complete programming language, reduced attack surface, and conservative evolution of consensus.
The study highlights that unlike Ethereum's programmable smart contracts, Bitcoin's infrastructure remains relatively secure due to its limited exposure and traditional cybersecurity measures still retaining effectiveness.
