Air Force One Delayed: Next-Generation Aircraft Faces Obsolescence Concerns
The production of the next-generation Air Force One is facing significant challenges, including delays and technological obsolescence. The two Boeing 747-8s being converted into VC-25B aircraft are now expected to enter service in 2028 and 2029, roughly four years later than originally planned.
The delay has raised concerns that the secure communications technology being built into the aircraft will be obsolete by the time it is delivered. The Pentagon has acknowledged that the planned communications baseline will no longer be viable beyond 2028 due to cybersecurity and obsolescence issues.
This means that the aircraft could be physically finished but still require a significant technology refresh before it can perform its intended presidential mission.
