Air Force's Advanced Grey Wolf Helicopter Clears Initial Operational Threshold
The U.S. Air Force has announced that its MH-139 Grey Wolf helicopter has achieved initial operational capability (IOC), marking a significant milestone in its development.
The Boeing-made helicopter, designed to escort nuclear missile facilities, surpassed the IOC milestone on August 10th.
This achievement follows years of setbacks and delays, including issues with obtaining Federal Aviation Administration approval. The project was initially projected to reach IOC by 2023, according to a 2021 Government Accountability Office report.
The MH-139 Grey Wolf boasts advanced capabilities compared to its predecessor, the UH-1N Huey, including greater speed, improved defensive capabilities, and an ability to carry twice the number of troops. Its developer, Boeing, has reported international interest in the aircraft, although no new customers have publicly announced deals for the MH-139.
The transition from the aging UH-1N Huey to the MH-139 will be gradual, with some units already receiving the new system and others expected to follow suit. The Air Force has stated that the Grey Wolf's advanced capabilities will directly empower airborne forces in securing the Minuteman III weapons system.
