Air India 787 Engine Shutdown Triggers Expanded Inspection Requirements
Air India's Boeing 787-8 aircraft VT-ANW experienced an engine surge followed by an in-flight shutdown during its climb from Mumbai to London's Heathrow Airport on August 4, 2023.
The flight had 267 people on board and returned safely to Mumbai with a single-engine landing. The investigation attributed the incident to improper installation of locking lugs on an HPC Stage-10 blade in 2018.
GE Aerospace expanded borescope inspection requirements for affected engines after the incident, including additional engine serial numbers. The regulator said compliance was completed within the prescribed timeline.
