Air Racing Returns to Microsoft Flight Simulator as Free Update

The National Championship Air Races are returning to Microsoft Flight Simulator on October 13, 2026. The new version is a rebuild of the original mode that was released in 2021 as a paid expansion for MSFS 2020. However, this time it will be free for all players.

The Reno Air Races first came to Microsoft Flight Simulator in November 2021 as a paid expansion with a $19.99 starter pack and a $59.99 full collection of 40 aircraft. It was an ambitious package, but the price drew criticism and the content never carried over to MSFS 2024.

Jörg Neumann addressed this issue at FlightSimExpo in June by confirming that the Air Races would come back as a free update. The new version will include five classes of aircraft: Unlimited Class with the P-51 Mustang, T-6 Class with the North American T-6 Texan, Biplane Class with the Aviat Pitts Special S1S, Jet Class with the Aero Vodochody L-39, and a new STOL Class.

The MSFS team worked closely with the Reno Air Racing Association and dozens of pilots and owners on the aircraft recreations. The mode will also feature a new wear-and-tear system to add realism to the multi-lap racing experience.
