Airbnb's Bezos-Like Vision Sets It Up for Long-Term Growth
Airbnb's CEO Brian Chesky has become one of the most admired CEOs in Silicon Valley, known for his visionary thinking and openness about company decisions. He recently reclaimed more control over the organization, returning to 'founder mode' after noticing key decision-making had become too dispersed.
The company's stock surged to a four-year high on Friday following a strong second-quarter earnings report, in which Airbnb beat estimates on both the top and bottom lines and raised its guidance. This success comes despite the company often trading sideways throughout its history and underperforming the S&P 500 during an epic tech boom.
Airbnb is starting to evolve as a platform, moving beyond home-sharing and following in the footsteps of Amazon, which built the first dominant e-commerce marketplace. Chesky has stated his desire for Airbnb to be 'one place you go for all of your traveling and living needs,' similar to Amazon. He noted that while currently people use the app once or twice a year, he'd like it to become one they visit weekly.
Airbnb is taking steps in this direction by expanding its services marketplace, which now includes car rentals, grocery delivery, airport pickups, and luggage storage. It's also adding boutique and independent hotel bookings, giving customers access to more than just homestays. This move adds utility to the platform, making customers more likely to visit the site, and attracting more vendors, growing the business.
