Airbus A350 Development Costs 50% Less Than Boeing 787
The Airbus A350's price tag is reportedly 50% less than that of the Boeing 787, according to industry data. This significant difference can be attributed to various factors, including development strategy and design approach. The 787 program was plagued by delays, supply chain issues, and redesign cycles, which increased costs from an estimated $15 billion to $30-32 billion.
Boeing's aggressive outsourcing strategy, where around 70% of the aircraft's production was delegated to suppliers, contributed to these challenges. This approach led to coordination and quality control issues, forcing Boeing to step in and fix problems internally, resulting in significant delays and cost overruns.
In contrast, Airbus adopted a more cautious and controlled development strategy for the A350 program. The company retained greater control over design and integration, with key components produced within its established European network, reducing coordination issues and ensuring smoother communication between teams.
