Airbus Surges Past Boeing in Commercial Aircraft Deliveries
The Airbus-Boeing rivalry in the commercial aircraft market has taken an interesting turn. For most of 2026, Boeing held the lead in deliveries, but Airbus overtook its rival in May with a record-breaking 81 aircraft handed over to customers.
This surge propelled Airbus ahead on both delivery and order counts by mid-year. According to one tally, Airbus had booked around 368 net orders for the year, dwarfing Boeing's roughly 140 net orders.
The A320neo family, particularly the A321neo and its long-range variant, the A321XLR, is driving Airbus' success in securing new orders. This single-aisle aircraft allows airlines to fly longer, thinner routes with greater efficiency.
Boeing's 737 MAX remains a best-seller for the company, but it continues to face production and reputational challenges from recent years. The manufacturer has been working to rebuild its backlog and regain market share.
