Airliners Make the Switch to Carbon Fiber

The aviation industry has undergone significant changes in recent years, with Boeing's introduction of the 787 Dreamliner marking a major shift away from traditional aluminum construction. The aircraft is built primarily using carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), which offers several key advantages over metal.

One of the primary benefits of CFRP is its significantly lower weight compared to aluminum. For an equivalent volume, CFRP is roughly 40% lighter, making it a more fuel-efficient option for airlines. This reduction in weight also translates to longer service life and reduced maintenance costs due to the material's resistance to fatigue and corrosion.

The use of CFRP has also changed the way aircraft are built. Boeing winds carbon-fiber tape around a giant mold to form each fuselage section as a single seamless barrel, which is then baked hard in an autoclave. This approach reduces the number of joints, rivets, and fatigue points, resulting in less drag and improved overall performance.

While composites are not perfect, they offer several advantages over traditional metal construction. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350 XWB have effectively settled the argument in favor of composites for modern long-haul jets, with their lighter weight, longer service life, and corrosion-resistant properties making them an attractive option for airlines.
