Aker and Microsoft Team Up to Advance Global Carbon Capture and Removal Projects

Aker Solutions and Microsoft are partnering to advance global carbon capture and removal projects. The partnership will see both companies work together on projects worldwide, providing engineering and project development capabilities from Aker Solutions combined with Microsoft's data, AI, digital monitoring, reporting, and verification technology.

The goal of the partnership is to reduce execution risk and strengthen investment cases for these projects. This includes supporting projects from initial feasibility and techno-economic work through to engineering, construction, and operations. Additionally, potential carbon dioxide removal credits will be part of the work where relevant.

Aker Solutions has been building out its own role across the CCS chain beyond capture technology. The company is working on Hafslund Celsio's Oslo CCS development, including the carbon capture plant and a harbour terminal for shipping liquefied CO2 to permanent storage under Norway's Longship programme. This project aims to capture around 350,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Microsoft has become one of the world's biggest corporate buyers of carbon removal, targeting becoming carbon negative by 2030 and removing all its historical operational emissions by 2050.
