Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-700 Diverts to Fresno After Rapid Descent

An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-700 aircraft, registered N612AS, was forced to divert to Fresno Yosemite International Airport after experiencing a mechanical issue.

The plane, which took off from John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana at 9:08 p.m. PDT on September 6, 2026, was headed to Seattle when it began a rapid descent from 40,000 feet due to the problem.

According to aviation safety guidance, pilots must descend to 10,000 feet or lower when cabin pressurization is lost, as high altitude air pressure and oxygen levels can be life-threatening without supplemental oxygen.

The Alaska Airlines flight crew declared an emergency and requested vectors to the nearest airport after rapidly descending from cruising altitude.
