Alibaba's Qwen Surpasses 3 Billion Downloads, Outpaces Rivals
Alibaba's Qwen AI models have reached an impressive milestone of over 3 billion global downloads in just six months, surpassing Meta and Google in adoption. This achievement underscores Alibaba's growing influence in the global open-model ecosystem as Chinese AI developers increasingly compete with U.S. technology companies for developers, enterprise customers, and AI infrastructure spending.
According to Hugging Face's State of Open Models report, Qwen models have been downloaded over 3 billion times, while Google models recorded about 418 million downloads in 2026, and Meta models reached roughly 227 million. This significant adoption indicates that developers are choosing Qwen as a foundation for new applications.
Alibaba has open-sourced more than 460 Qwen models, while developers have created over 300,000 derivative models based on the technology. The company's strategy of releasing models designed to approach the capabilities of leading proprietary systems at a relatively low cost and high adaptability appears to be gaining traction internationally.
The growth of Qwen also highlights Alibaba's efforts to expand its reach through its cloud business, distributing the technology to enterprise customers in international markets including Southeast Asia and Africa. This strategy can create a powerful network effect, attracting more developers and businesses to the ecosystem as more models are created and specialized.
