Alphabet Bonds Signal Aggressive Push into AI Research
Alphabet has made significant moves to fund its massive AI infrastructure build-out. The company recently completed a series of US$22.93 billion senior unsecured bond issues across maturities from 2028 to 2066, signaling its commitment to aggressively investing in AI research and development. This move is part of Alphabet's twin focus on centralizing high-level AI research under a scientist-led structure while funding a massive build-out of the company's AI infrastructure.
The bond sale sits alongside Alphabet's earlier US$18 billion equity raise and its decision to guide 2026 capital expenditure to US$195 billion to US$205 billion. This underlines how central AI data centers and custom hardware have become to the story, and how sensitive the investment case now is to Google Cloud's ability to keep signing large AI infrastructure deals at attractive economics.
Rising legal and regulatory pressures are also a concern for Alphabet, which could impact its growth story. However, analysts remain optimistic about the company's prospects, with some penciling in US$832 billion of revenue and US$263.7 billion of earnings by 2029.
