Alphabet Ditches Advertising for Cloud as AI Story Shifts
Alphabet's AI story has shifted from its advertising engine to the machinery underneath it. In April 2024, management framed AI monetization through Ads and Cloud as well as subscriptions, but this is no longer the case. Today, Alphabet generates revenue from TPU system sales, which deliver chips into customers' own data centers rather than renting time on them.
Cloud revenue grew 82% in Q2 2026, and the company has a $514 billion cloud backlog, representing years ahead, not banked results. Google Services, the advertising and subscription arm, generates about $343 billion a year, roughly 77% of total company revenue.
The biggest advertising line is running faster than it did when the AI story still ran through advertising: Search and other grew 17% year over year in Q2 2026, against 14% in Q1 2024. However, inside advertising, Network advertising revenues fell 1% year over year in Q2 2026.
The pivot has been paying so far, with Alphabet's revenue reaching about $446 billion over the trailing twelve months, up 20%. The company now guides capital spending to $195 billion to $205 billion and has already said that leaning on third-party capacity will put some pressure on cloud margins.
