Alphabet Dodges 460M Fine with European Search Overhaul
Alphabet, Google's parent company, faced a crucial decision to avoid a hefty fine. The Digital Markets Act compelled Google to revise its European search experience. This overhaul prioritizes specialized platforms like Expedia and Booking.com over Google's own listings. As a result, certain prices and commercial details are no longer visible on Google.
This strategic move may dilute the quality of search results but helps Alphabet sidestep a 460 million fine and recurring payments up to 5% of its worldwide turnover. The revised market price of Alphabet is $337.14, reflecting the updated valuation. Alphabet trades 31.9% above its estimated value of $255.60.
The Digital Markets Act's requirements are significant, as Google Search and other revenue generated $63.3 billion last quarter, accounting for approximately 52.8% of Alphabet's $119.8 billion total.
