Alphabet Dumps $15 Billion into Finnish AI Hub
Alphabet, Google's parent company, is investing at least $15.1 billion in Finland through 2028 to build out its AI infrastructure. The investment is part of a broader pattern of Alphabet pouring massive capital into physical infrastructure to support AI demand.
The money will go towards data centers, as well as new energy infrastructure and initiatives to keep energy affordable for the region. Google signed a 22-year power purchase agreement with Finnish energy company Fortum to extend the life of existing power supply.
Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, framed this as deepening the roots the company has built over more than 15 years in Finland. She noted that the investment pairs new technical infrastructure with new energy capacity, grid improvements, and initiatives to keep energy affordable for the region.
Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo welcomed the deal, saying it will have broader innovation and research benefits for the country.
