Alphabet Invests €13 Billion in Finland's AI Infrastructure
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has announced a massive investment in Finland's AI infrastructure. The tech giant pledged at least €13 billion to build data centers, upgrade grids, invest in renewable energy and battery storage over a two-year period. This commitment is part of Alphabet's push to address the computing power bottleneck that hinders AI growth.
The agreement also includes a 22-year contract with Fortum's nuclear plant, allowing Google to purchase up to half of the electricity generated. This move secures long-duration power for Google's data centers and other operations, which are expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
Finland expects the project to boost its economic output by €3.6 billion and support around 7,000 jobs annually once completed. However, investors should separate the economic benefits from Alphabet's returns on investment. The real test lies in whether Google's cloud and advertising growth can recover the heavy capital spending.
