Alphabet Locks In Nuclear Power Deal Amid AI Infrastructure Push
Alphabet's GOOGL stock surged approximately 2.5% to $338.67 on Friday morning after the tech giant pledged at least $13 billion for a massive AI infrastructure push in Finland.
The two-year project will span data centers, grid upgrades, renewable energy, and battery storage, with Google securing a 22-year agreement to buy up to half the electricity generated by a Fortum nuclear plant.
This long-term commitment is crucial as Alphabet's services like Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube require dependable power at enormous scale. The Finnish government expects this project to add $3.6 billion to its economic output and support around 7,000 jobs annually.
However, investors should separate the economic benefits from Alphabet's own returns on investment. The company needs to demonstrate that cloud and advertising growth can offset the heavy capital spending associated with this AI expansion.
