Alphabet Promotes Koray Kavukcuoglu to Lead DeepMind Amid A.I. Performance Pressure
Alphabet's DeepMind A.I. unit has a new leader. Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over from co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis, who will become chair of the organization.
Kavukcuoglu was previously DeepMind's chief technology officer (CTO) and Google's chief A.I. architect. He joined DeepMind in 2012 before Alphabet's acquisition in 2014.
Analysts say Kavukcuoglu will face intense pressure to close the A.I. performance gap with OpenAI and Anthropic, which have released new systems praised for their speed and accuracy this summer.
The Gemini model, released by DeepMind in 2025, was previously seen as a leader in frontier A.I. models. However, Alphabet hasn't unveiled a new A.I. model since the start of this year.
