Alphabet Shares Plummet Amid AI Leadership Shake-Up
Google's AI leadership is undergoing significant changes that have sent Alphabet shares plummeting. Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist for 27 years, is leaving his post to launch an AI startup called Discovery Loop with fellow colleague Sanjay Ghemawat.
In a blog post, CEO Sundar Pichai announced the departures and new appointments within Google DeepMind. Demis Hassabis will take over as chair of the unit and become chief scientist of Alphabet, while Koray Kavukcuoglu will assume the role of Senior Vice President (SVP) overseeing Gemini model development.
The changes come amid anticipation for Google's highly anticipated Gemini 3.5 Pro next-generation frontier model. However, Hassabis expressed confidence in Kavukcuoglu's leadership and the team's progress with new models, including Gemini 4.
