Alphabet Surges Ahead of Amazon and Microsoft as Cloud Computing Leader
The earnings season has been in full swing, and three of the largest hyperscalers have released their quarterly updates. Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), and Alphabet (GOOG) make up what is known as the 'Big Three' in the cloud computing industry. Their recent performances have led to a post-earnings jump for Amazon and Microsoft, but Alphabet's update resulted in a dip.
The services offered by these companies through their respective cloud businesses overlap significantly. However, they also have distinct differences. For instance, Amazon was the pioneer and has the broadest cloud platform, while Microsoft is attractive to enterprises that already use its products. Alphabet stands out for its expertise in certain niches, including data analytics and machine learning.
In terms of market share, Amazon holds the largest share, followed by Microsoft. However, Alphabet is currently growing its cloud computing sales much faster than its peers, with a remarkable 82% year-over-year growth in the second quarter. This outpaces Amazon Web Services' (AWS) 37% growth and Microsoft Azure's 43% increase.
The reason behind Alphabet's impressive growth lies in its expertise in artificial intelligence (AI). A disproportionate number of businesses seem to be choosing Google Cloud to build and run AI applications, making the company a big winner of the AI boom. This trend is expected to continue, given Alphabet's strong position in AI.
