Alphabet Surges Past Microsoft in Enterprise AI Growth
Microsoft and Alphabet's recent earnings reports have reframed the enterprise AI race. Microsoft closed its fiscal year with Azure crossing $100 billion in annual revenue, while Alphabet's Google Cloud growth accelerated to 82%. Both companies are pouring significant amounts of money into data centers.
Microsoft posted Q4 revenue of $90.01 billion, up 17.8%, with Intelligent Cloud at $39.31 billion (+32%) and Azure up 43%. Satya Nadella stated that 'demand continues to exceed available supply', a constraint reflected in the commercial RPO backlog that surged 84% to $678 billion.
Alphabet's earnings, however, show a different picture. Q2 revenue hit $119.80 billion, up 24.2%, with Google Cloud reaching $24.77 billion. Sundar Pichai announced 'nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 using' Gemini Enterprise, and that Gemini processes 22 billion API tokens per minute.
Alphabet's capex is more aggressive than Microsoft's, flipping free cash flow to negative $6 billion while Microsoft still generated $20 billion. This raises concerns about AI capex ROI for both companies.
