Alphabet's AI Model Promises Fall Short as 3.8 Flash Takes Center Stage
Alphabet's (GOOG) Sundar Pichai faced criticism for his promise of a flagship AI model in June, which failed to materialize by August. Instead, Google is set to release a new coding model called 3.8 Flash, which its engineers prefer over Anthropic's Claude Opus for internal work.
The release of 3.8 Flash comes as Alphabet's stock has taken a hit, closing at $335.02 on September 1, down 5.93% from the past month. Despite this, the year-to-date figure sits at 7.17%, and the one-year return is still 57.8%.
The new coding model matters because it can help developers generate volume, which is where Google Cloud captures margin. Alphabet's Q2 report showed that cloud revenue grew 82% to $24.77 billion, with nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 using Gemini Enterprise.
