Alphabet's Project Braid Hit with Construction Setbacks Amid $5B Partnership
Alphabet's ambitious AI cloud infrastructure partnership, 'Project Braid,' is facing significant challenges as construction setbacks accumulate across multiple locations. The $5 billion initiative with Blackstone aims to provide access to Google's AI processors for enterprise clients by 2027.
The project has encountered numerous issues, including the termination of its arrangement with data center specialist Crusoe in Wyoming's capital city of Cheyenne. This decision was made after concerns arose about Crusoe's execution capabilities, and Google is now resubmitting applications for necessary permits.
Additionally, a prospective site was abandoned due to insufficient electrical transformer availability, while supply chain bottlenecks for specialized equipment have become acute, with procurement timelines extending nearly 12 months. The complications in Texas added another layer of difficulty, as Governor Greg Abbott instituted a temporary halt on approving new data center developments.
Project Braid CEO Benjamin Treynor Sloss remains optimistic about the timeline, stating that 'it is very common for individual potential sites to progress at different rates.' He emphasized the partnership's diversified set of options and continued strong progress. The team has identified 29 prospective locations and continues broadening their search.
