Amazon Accused of Firing Pregnant Workers Who Sought Accommodations
A nationwide class-action lawsuit has been filed against Amazon, accusing the company of discriminating against pregnant employees.
The lawsuit alleges that Amazon violated the federal Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and New York state law by denying or delaying requests for accommodations such as chairs, breaks, and time off for medical appointments.
According to the complaint, Amazon required 'unnecessary' medical documentation for every accommodation request, which often resulted in denials or delays.
The plaintiffs claim that Amazon's tracking practices penalized employees for taking legally protected pumping breaks, while also automatically deducting time off for medical appointments from their limited banks of unpaid time off.
