Amazon Accused of Misleading Seafood Labels with Greenwashing Claims
A new lawsuit claims Amazon's 'wild caught' and 'sustainable' seafood labels are misleading, alleging that the company fails to disclose the true source of its products.
The proposed class action covers dozens of seafood products, including tuna and salmon sold under brands such as Bumble Bee, Chicken of the Sea, StarKist, and Amazon's 365 by Whole Foods Market.
The plaintiffs argue that Amazon's marketing language is 'greenwashing,' leading consumers to believe that the company's seafood products cause little harm to oceans and the environment. However, they claim that the sustainability representations are either unsupported or materially misleading.
The lawsuit targets Amazon's lack of transparency in its supply chain, citing that many fishing vessels are not publicly tracked and may obscure their locations by disabling electronic tracking systems.
