Amazon (AMZN) is making a strategic move in the world of data analytics by acquiring DuckLabs, the Amsterdam-based company behind the open-source analytical database, DuckDB. The acquisition, which will be completed by early September, marks a natural progression of the existing partnership between AWS and DuckLabs.

The deal brings the entire DuckLabs engineering team under the umbrella of AWS, with co-founders Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt retaining their leadership roles. The open-source database will continue to be governed by the non-profit DuckDB Foundation, operating under the MIT license framework.

The acquisition is designed to deliver faster, more affordable, and streamlined analytics solutions for AWS users, with a focus on enterprise customers. AWS vice president Andy Warfield highlighted the alignment between DuckLabs' philosophy of enabling innovation through data and AWS's approach to data infrastructure.
