Amazon and Alphabet Outpace Microsoft in Cloud Growth
Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft are often referred to as the big three hyperscalers due to their dominance in cloud computing. These companies operate the leading cloud platforms, which are crucial for running AI workloads, but most firms don't have sufficient computing capacity.
This has led to a massive investment in data center capital expenditures, with estimates suggesting hundreds of billions of dollars will be spent this year and next. The rapid acceleration of their cloud growth rates is expected to drive substantial growth for these companies.
Among the three, two stand out as smart buys: Amazon and Alphabet. Both have seen significant growth in their cloud computing segments, with Google Cloud's revenue increasing 82% year-over-year in Q2, surpassing its peers. In contrast, Microsoft's Azure growth rate has remained relatively stagnant at 40%, despite AWS' rapidly accelerating growth.
Microsoft is the cheapest of the three based on one valuation measure, but its slower growth rate and lackluster performance in the cloud segment make it less attractive than Amazon and Alphabet. As a result, investors may want to consider grabbing market share rather than focusing solely on a lower price tag.
