Amazon and Alphabet Stake Claim on Anthropic Ahead of $1 Trillion IPO
Anthropic, a leading AI lab behind the Claude models, is gearing up for a highly anticipated public offering reportedly valued at nearly $1 trillion. While most investors cannot yet purchase Anthropic directly, two prominent tech giants, Amazon and Alphabet, already have significant stakes in the company.
Amazon has committed approximately $33 billion to Anthropic, with plans to invest tens of billions more, giving it a stake worth over $100 billion. The relationship between the two companies extends beyond financial investment, as Anthropic has agreed to spend more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services and Trainium chips.
Alphabet owns around 14% of Anthropic, valued at approximately $135 billion at recent valuations, and Anthropic has committed to spending about $200 billion on Google Cloud over five years. Both companies' stakes in Anthropic are substantial but still relatively small compared to their massive market capitalizations.
Investors looking to gain exposure to Anthropic before its IPO can consider buying Amazon and Alphabet stocks for the whole company, treating the Anthropic stake as a valuable bonus. This approach allows investors to potentially benefit from both companies' growth, regardless of Anthropic's public offering outcome.
