Amazon Cargo Jet Crash Kills Five Plane Cleaners at Miami Airport

An Amazon cargo jet crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday, September 8, killing five people who were in a van used to shuttle plane cleaners. The jet, operated by 21 Air and originally built as a passenger plane, overran the runway while landing from a two-hour flight from Puerto Rico.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash, with a focus on the lack of a system to slow and stop speeding jets at the end of runways. Miami International Airport does not have such a system, despite being one of over 120 airports in the US where it has been implemented.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said that runway excursions continue to happen even after the board has suggested installing these systems in the past. 'Our recommendations must be implemented or we're going to be here again,' she stated.
