Amazon Cargo Jet Crashes at Miami Airport, Five Killed in Runway Collision

Investigators released new details about the Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport on Sunday. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said that the Boeing 767 jet attempted to abort its landing before it overran the runway, causing a fatal collision with a van. Five people were killed in the accident.

The NTSB's investigation revealed that the plane's nose and right main landing gear touched down first at a speed of 158 knots, followed by the left main landing gear 11 seconds later. The crew then applied brakes, but released them 15 seconds before the recording stopped. There was no indication in the data that the plane's speed brakes or thrust reversers were deployed.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy cautioned that investigators have not determined why the systems were not used and whether they should have been. The agency will continue to analyze the flight-data record and conduct an aircraft-performance study before releasing further information.
