Amazon Cargo Jet Crashes in Miami, Killing Five
A devastating plane crash at Miami International Airport has left five people dead and several others injured. The accident occurred on Sunday when an Amazon Air cargo jet overran a runway while landing, crashing into a van that was being used to shuttle crew members who clean planes.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash, with a focus on the lack of a system to slow and stop speeding jets at the end of runways. Miami International Airport does not have such a system, despite being one of the 120 airports in the US that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommends installing.
According to NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy, the agency's goal is to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. 'Our recommendations must be implemented or we're going to be here again,' she said at a news conference on Monday.
The Amazon jet was landing after a two-hour flight from Puerto Rico, and strong winds were reported in the area at the time of the crash. The pilot and co-pilot have been released from the hospital, but two people remain in critical condition and one is stable.
