Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes at Miami Airport
A cargo plane operated by Amazon crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, killing five people and injuring five others. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), one of the pilots repeatedly warned his counterpart that they were coming in too fast as they approached for landing.
The NTSB released cockpit voice recordings, which showed that the pilot at the controls never gave a consistent verbal response to the warnings. The plane touched down awkwardly and briefly attempted to take off before smashing into a van carrying workers at a plane cleaning company.
Former FAA official Mike O'Donnell said that the crew had time to correct or abandon their landing, and could have done several things to slow down, including extending the spoilers, cutting the throttles, and lowering the landing gear. Alternatively, they could have aborted the landing and circled around to try again.
Experts have questioned how well the pilots worked together, with some suggesting that the pilot at the controls may have been too focused on the landing to acknowledge the speed warnings.
