Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes at Miami Airport, Multiple Fatalities Reported
A devastating cargo plane crash occurred at Miami International Airport on Sunday, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The Amazon-operated Prime Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767, overran the runway while landing around 2 p.m. ET after departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
According to Rosie Cordero-Stutz, the Miami-Dade County Sheriff, the plane came to rest in a field adjacent to the airport, with its tail over the fence and thick black smoke rising from the aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it will investigate the crash, which occurred around 1:58 p.m.
The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue had responded with over 60 units, and MDFR Chief Ray Jadallah reported a fuel leak from the aircraft, which they are working to mitigate. The FAA issued a ground stop on planes until 3 p.m., later extended until 5:30 p.m., due to significant delays and potential cancellations.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated that the company is 'still gathering details' and prioritizes the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved. The plane was being operated by contract cargo carrier 21 Air at the time of the crash.
