Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes at Miami International Airport
A cargo plane operated by Amazon Prime Air, a Boeing 767-300, overran the runway and crashed while attempting to land at Miami International Airport on Sunday. The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) on September 6.
According to local officials, the plane struck multiple vehicles on the ground, resulting in a tragic loss of five lives. Five people were also injured in the crash, including three who are in critical condition, said Miami-Dade Fire Chief Ray Jadallah.
The pilot and co-pilot were trapped inside the plane by the crash, while at least two people were trapped in vehicles that were struck by the plane. More than 60 rescue units and about 200 personnel responded to the incident, with emergency personnel still dealing with an active fuel leak from the aircraft as of late afternoon.
The airport halted all flights immediately after the crash but reopened two of its four runways by Sunday evening. The cargo airline, 21 Air, operated the plane for Amazon, and the company is currently gathering details about what happened. 'We're working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened,' said an Amazon spokesperson.
