Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes into Van at Miami International Airport
A Boeing 767 cargo plane operated by Amazon's 21 Air crashed on Sunday at Miami International Airport, killing five people and injuring five others.
The plane was attempting to land on Runway 30 when it overshot the runway, causing significant damage and destruction in its path. According to tracking data from Flightradar24, the plane was traveling at nearly 130 miles per hour when it crashed into a van carrying seven people.
National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy described the incident as 'utter devastation.' Investigators will examine the aircraft's operations and human performance, including flight crew experience, training, and air traffic control. Other factors, such as the flight operator's contractual relationship with Amazon and FAA oversight, will also be reviewed.
The crash has raised questions about safety measures at Miami International Airport, particularly regarding runway excursions, which occur when airplanes go off the end of a runway during landing or takeoff. The incident has caused delays in flights headed to the airport, with an average delay of over five hours.
