Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes Off Miami Runway, Killing Five
A cargo plane operated by Amazon's logistics partner, 21 Air, careened off a Miami runway on Sunday afternoon, killing five people and injuring five others. The Boeing 767 jet was landing at the time of the incident.
According to cockpit voice recordings released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), one of the pilots repeatedly warned his counterpart that they were coming in too fast as they approached for landing. However, the other pilot failed to respond consistently to these warnings.
The plane touched down awkwardly and attempted to take off again, but instead crashed into a van carrying workers at a plane cleaning company. The van was then hit by the cargo plane before it caught fire.
Former FAA official Mike O'Donnell said that the pilots had ample time to slow down or abort the landing, citing the plane's advanced systems and the fact that they were only two minutes out from touchdown.
