Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes Off Runway at Miami International Airport
An Amazon cargo plane crashed off a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, killing five people and injuring five others.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash involving a Boeing 767 operated for Amazon Prime Air by North Carolina-based cargo carrier 21 Air.
According to investigators, the plane may have touched down too far down the runway to stop safely before crashing off the runway. The NTSB is examining various factors, including pilot decision-making, weather conditions during landing, and whether the aircraft had enough runway remaining to stop safely after touchdown.
Airport safety experts are also raising questions about runway safety infrastructure, specifically the lack of an Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) at Miami International Airport. The system uses crushable material designed to slow and stop an aircraft that overruns a runway.
