Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes Off Runway in Miami
An Amazon cargo plane crashed off the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, killing five people and injuring several others. The plane, operated by Prime Air but contracted to 21 Air, a cargo carrier based in North Carolina, was attempting to land from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Boeing 767-300 freighter remained airborne well down the runway before touching down at around 2pm local time, with witnesses reporting that it was still moving at roughly 129 miles per hour (208 kilometres per hour) at the end of the runway. The plane's speed and the conditions on the ground were questioned by aviation experts.
The aircraft tore through a fence and crossed a service road before slamming into a van carrying seven people from a cleaning company and a Toyota SUV, leaving behind five dead and several injured. The victims all died outside of airport property, with the NTSB chair stating that the van was 'torn apart.'
