Amazon Cargo Plane Overshoots Runway, Killing Five and Injuring Five Others in Miami
An Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, killing five people and injuring five others. The Boeing 767-300 cargo plane, operated by 21 Air, was arriving from Puerto Rico when it overran the end of the runway, traveling at 129 mph. The aircraft then hit a white Ford van carrying seven cleaning company employees, 'torn apart' by the impact, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.
The plane continued for around 1,300 feet past the paved surface, crossing a grassy patch and a chain-link fence with razor wire before coming to a stop near a parking lot where Tesla robotaxis were stationed. Federal investigators are examining the crash to determine whether the plane touched down too late to stop safely.
Amazon said in a statement that they are cooperating fully with local authorities and officials to learn more about the incident, adding 'Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss.'
