Amazon Cloud Surges Ahead of Retail Business
Amazon's cloud business has taken center stage in the company's financial performance. Despite being primarily a retail operation, Amazon Web Services (AWS) generated nearly twice as much revenue as the North America segment in the second quarter of 2026. AWS earned $42.2 billion in revenue, compared to North America's $116.2 billion.
The company's cloud business has been growing rapidly, with a 36.7% year-over-year increase in revenue, marking its fifth consecutive quarter of acceleration. This growth is driven by a large backlog and the success of custom silicon, which now generates over $25 billion annually.
However, Amazon's retail business continues to face challenges, particularly when it comes to shipping costs. The company has implemented various measures to mitigate these costs, including a fuel and logistics surcharge in April. Nevertheless, management acknowledges that transportation costs are rising, which could impact the North America segment's operating margin.
The company plans to invest approximately $220 billion in cash capital expenditure in 2026, primarily for data center infrastructure. This investment is expected to break even within three years and have a useful life of at least five to six years.
