Amazon Cracks Down on Counterfeiters as India's Festive Shopping Season Looms
Amazon is stepping up its fight against counterfeit products in India as it prepares for the country's upcoming festive shopping season. The e-commerce company will increase the work of its Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU) in India, which includes closer coordination with local law enforcement agencies.
The CCU director, Kebharu Smith, said that Amazon is focused on taking action against businesses and individuals involved in selling counterfeit products. This comes as a significant move for the company, which has more than 1.7 million sellers in India, with around half based in tier-two and tier-three cities.
Since launching its CCU in June 2020 as a global team to investigate and take legal action against counterfeiters, Amazon has pursued over 32,000 bad actors through civil litigation and referrals to law enforcement agencies. The company claims that it has helped identify, seize, and dispose of more than 15 million counterfeit products worldwide.
Amazon's efforts also include seller verification, brand protection tools, and other controls designed to detect counterfeit products. In 2025, the company blocked over 285 million suspected fake reviews worldwide and verified more than 2.7 billion product units as genuine through its Transparency program.
