Amazon Cuts Ties to Mechanical Turk Amid Shift to AI-Powered Labor

Amazon's Mechanical Turk platform will shut down on September 30, 2026, after 21 years of connecting businesses and researchers with human workers for data-related tasks. The platform was built to provide 'human intelligence' that computers couldn't perform, but as AI systems have improved, the line between human and machine work has become harder to draw.

Launched in 2005, Mechanical Turk allowed users to complete small 'Human Intelligence Tasks' or HITs for a few cents each. The platform provided access to a workforce operating around the clock, with over 500,000 workers contributing at its peak.

Krista Pawloski, a data worker and organizer with Turkopticon, noted that Mechanical Turk had been in decline as Amazon invested fewer resources in the platform and competing services gained ground. A 2023 study found that up to 46% of Mechanical Turk workers used AI models to complete assigned tasks.

The shutdown will impact businesses reliant on Mechanical Turk for data work, including insurance and travel companies, which will need to find alternatives before the September deadline. For workers, the closure means a loss of flexible, remote income, with some relying on it as full-time work.
