Amazon Ditches MMOs as It Shifts Focus to AAA Titles and Cloud Gaming
Amazon Game Studios is stepping back from two of its massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, 'Lost Ark' and 'Throne and Liberty', in a strategic shift. The company will return publishing responsibilities for these titles to their respective developers, Smilegate and NC.
This move comes after Amazon faced significant layoffs last October as part of broader corporate cuts. The company has since indicated its plans to pivot away from investing in MMOs, focusing instead on already planned AAA titles like the upcoming 'Tomb Raider' games and expanding its cloud gaming service Luna.
Players of both games will not be directly affected by the transition, with data transferring directly to the developers. However, some game-specific details such as chat history and gift messages will not transfer over for 'Lost Ark'. Accounts will be transferred automatically, with 'Throne and Liberty' beginning later this year and 'Lost Ark' in early 2027.
