Amazon Doubles Down on Nvidia as It Builds Its Own AI Chips
Amazon is doubling down on Nvidia hardware even as it continues to develop its own AI chips. The tech giant will deploy an additional 2 million Nvidia GPUs between 2027 and 2028, including Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, and Rubin Ultra systems.
This move comes in addition to the 1 million Nvidia chips Amazon had already committed to installing starting in 2026. AWS and Nvidia are also expanding their partnership beyond just GPUs.
The companies plan to build dedicated AI factories for the U.S. government using 100,000 GPUs. Additionally, Nvidia's Nemotron models will be added to Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker. Amazon Robotics will use Nvidia's physical AI platform for warehouse automation.
Despite investing in its own Trainium processors through Annapurna Labs, Amazon still relies heavily on Nvidia for AI infrastructure. AWS said that Annapurna Labs will work with Nvidia to extend NVLink Fusion with high-bandwidth memory for Trainium chips.
