Amazon Drone Drops Package into Customer's Swimming Pool Amid Expansion Plans
Amazon's Prime Air drone delivery system has been criticized after one customer had their package dropped into their swimming pool. Lindsey Austen, a resident of Richmond, Texas, was surprised to see an Amazon drone hovering over her backyard and dropping the package into the water. The package contained dry cat food and shoe insoles.
Austen's incident is not an isolated case. Another pool-related delivery mishap occurred in Arizona this year, with other incidents involving drones colliding with construction cranes or hitting residential internet cables. Amazon's Prime Air has been authorized by the FAA to operate beyond the operator's visual line of sight.
The company plans to expand its drone delivery service to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, which would be a roughly sixfold increase in coverage. However, this expansion also raises concerns about the system's ability to handle real-world situations that may not be as predictable as its training data suggests.
